Our Company
     H i s t o r y

Botanicus was founded in 1971 by Kathryn O'Donnell. The company opened as the Plant Parlour, first plants-only retail store in Western New York. During the 1970's the company expanded to include three retail stores, a wholesale greenhouse serving Western New York, and a Florida nursery farm.

Botanicus Nursery Farms produced hundreds of varieties of indoor plants, from mini ivies to twenty-foot palm and Ficus trees. This state-of-the-art 28-acre farm, located in Bonita Springs, Florida, distributed plants throughout the United States to retail and wholesale suppliers. Our nursery used a special type of growing medium, and grew plants under "shade cloth" to prepare them for interior conditions. To this day, many of the plants we care for at our clients' businesses were grown at the Botanicus nursery.

In the early 1970's the family business branched into commercial installation and service. Our first clients were banks, local malls, the Wintergarden in Niagara Falls, and many restaurants. The company was one of the pioneers in this new industry, and worked closely with national organizations to develop industry product and service standards.

In 1986, Kathryn was joined by her two daughters in the operations of the business. In 1989, we decided to concentrate solely on our commercial clientele, and closed the retail stores and growing range. For the past decade, Botanicus has "grown" to care for plants in over 500 large and small businesses in the Rochester and Buffalo, New York area.

In 2002, Botanicus launched an on-line catalog of silk plants, flowers, trees, decorative containers and holiday decorating items. Shop us onine at www.BotanicusEtc.com.
